Digital Learning Best Practices

Online learning requires responsibility, respect, and proper digital citizenship. Students are expected to:

  • Attend all scheduled online classes on time and prepared
  • Participate actively and respectfully in discussions
  • Use appropriate language and tone in all communications
  • Respect others' privacy and personal information
  • Keep cameras on during class unless given permission otherwise
  • Use chat features appropriately and only for class-related purposes
  • Dress appropriately and ensure a suitable learning environment
  • Seek help when needed and communicate with learning coaches professionally
  • Arrive on time for all scheduled PLP Coaching sessions - Punctuality shows respect for your learning coach and maximizes your learning time

Respectful Communication Guidelines

All digital communication should reflect our KIND values:

  • Think before you type - consider how your words might be received
  • Use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Avoid ALL CAPS (which can be perceived as shouting)
  • Be patient and understanding with others
  • Ask for clarification if you don't understand something
  • Report any concerning behavior to a trusted adult immediately

Zero-Tolerance for Cyberbullying

Our Commitment to Safety

ISA maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy for cyberbullying, harassment, and any form of digital abuse. We are committed to providing a safe learning environment where every student feels valued, respected, and protected.

Cyberbullying includes: Sending hurtful messages, spreading rumors online, sharing embarrassing photos or videos, excluding others from online groups, impersonating others, or any repeated harmful behavior using digital technology.

If you experience or witness cyberbullying, report it immediately using our Safety Report Form below.

What is Cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying is the use of digital technology to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another person. It can occur through:

  • Text messages, emails, or direct messages
  • Social media posts, comments, or shares
  • Online gaming platforms or chat rooms
  • Video sharing platforms
  • Any digital communication tool or platform

Prohibited Behaviors

The following behaviors are strictly prohibited and will result in immediate disciplinary action:

Harassment & Bullying

Any form of harassment, intimidation, or bullying of students, staff, or others through digital means.

Hate Speech

Using slurs, derogatory language, or discriminatory comments based on race, religion, gender, or any protected characteristic.

Inappropriate Content

Sharing, creating, or distributing inappropriate, explicit, or offensive content of any kind.

Privacy Violations

Sharing others' personal information, passwords, or private communications without permission.

Impersonation

Pretending to be someone else online or creating fake accounts to deceive others.

Academic Dishonesty

Cheating, plagiarism, or using unauthorized resources during assessments or assignments.

System Interference

Attempting to hack, disrupt, or damage school systems, networks, or other students' devices.

Illegal Activities

Engaging in or promoting any illegal activities, including sharing pirated content or illegal substances.

Reporting & Response

How to Report a Safety Concern

Your safety and well-being are our top priorities. If you experience or witness any behavior that violates this agreement, please report it immediately:

  • Use the Safety Report Form below - Available 24/7 for anonymous or identified reporting
  • Contact your learning coach or advisor - Reach out via email or during office hours
  • Email our safety team - learn@internationalschoolamerica.org

Our Response Process

When a safety concern is reported, ISA follows a thorough and fair process:

  • Immediate Review: All reports are reviewed within 24 hours
  • Investigation: We gather information from all parties involved
  • Support: Affected students receive immediate support and resources
  • Action: Appropriate consequences are applied based on severity
  • Follow-up: We monitor the situation to ensure resolution
  • Confidentiality: Reports are handled with discretion and privacy

Consequences

Violations of this Acceptable Use Policy will result in consequences appropriate to the severity and frequency of the offense. ISA uses a progressive discipline approach while maintaining zero-tolerance for serious violations.

Violation Level Examples Consequences
Level 1: Minor Inappropriate language in chat, off-task behavior, minor disruptions Warning, parent notification, reflection assignment
Level 2: Moderate Repeated minor violations, disrespectful communication, academic dishonesty Parent conference, temporary loss of privileges, behavioral contract
Level 3: Serious Harassment, sharing inappropriate content, privacy violations, impersonation Suspension from online activities, mandatory counseling, probationary status
Level 4: Severe Cyberbullying, threats, hate speech, illegal activities, system hacking Immediate suspension or expulsion, law enforcement notification if applicable

  • Take responsibility and make amends

Parent/Guardian Partnership

Working Together for Student Success

Parents and guardians play a crucial role in supporting safe and responsible digital learning. We ask that you:

  • Review this Acceptable Use Policy with your student
  • Monitor your student's online activities and screen time
  • Ensure your student has a quiet, appropriate space for learning
  • Communicate regularly with learning coaches about your student's progress
  • Report any concerns or incidents to school administration promptly
  • Model positive digital citizenship in your own online behavior
  • Support school policies and consequences when necessary
